The memories you have of them will stay with you for the rest of your all of. But film and old tape reels weren’t made to hold for the same length of time.

It’s true that films VHS tapes and DVDs are able to preserve your home films for decades (or years) when stored in the proper conditions. Even if they’re stored in a dry, cool area, the media will degrade, leaving your memories irretrievable.

With the advancement of technology, that old storage unit in your basement could be recorded and saved in the future for generations to cherish. You don’t need to be an expert on computers to accomplish it and your family will be grateful to you for keeping the memories in good health for years to be.

Take a look at these strategies for conserving your old home movies:

Make use of an DVD recorder. One of the easiest methods to save old tapes is to transfer them onto DVD. All you have to do is buy the DVD recorder, and then connect it to the tape player. As video cameras developed throughout the years, various tape formats were created: Betacam, VHS, Hi8 Mini-DV, VHS-C, and a few others among others. Therefore, make sure that you have the appropriate player(s) to play your collection of tapes. While you playback the tapes you have accumulated you can also save them to blank DVD discs. If you’d prefer to digitalize your video and then import it onto the DVD into your computer by using the video ripper. A final note: DVD recorders are becoming more difficult to find. You can locate a second-hand item through Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, or eBay at a significantly cheaper price.

Directly convert film into video. If you’re looking at piles of film in 8mm format and want to convert it into video, a converter for film might be the right tool to use. Simply load your reels into the device and then let the footage transfer directly onto a digital memory card. The best equipment will be priced between $300 and $1,000, but it’s definitely worth the cost to keep the precious memories you have if you have a lot of reels.

Connect your computer to. Purchase an analog video capture device to stream home movies directly onto your computer. These devices let you connect a tape player on one end, and then connect to the computer’s USB port on the other. After you’ve downloaded the appropriate software (which will come with the adapter) You can then convert your tapes to digital files and store them or burn to DVDs. The cost of a video capture device can be just $20. Be prepared to learn the program, which can occasionally be confusing.

Replay it. What better place to store your memories than the theater in your home? Show your film on the projection screen or uncluttered sheet, then bring the image to the full view on another video camera and record. Then, transfer your film to a computer , and create a digital copy. If you own an old projector reels of film, this method does not require any cost. Keep in mind that it’s more enjoyable than efficient, since it will not produce the highest quality image.

Engage a professional for camcorder tapes to digital transfer. As with many projects, at times it is best to rely on the expertise of a professional. The big retailers, local video or photo shops and even online platforms like iMemories and Legacybox provide these services. Expect to pay for the kind and quantity of film or tape you’d like to convert. The cost of these services is often high however the convenience cannot be outdone. Also, you won’t have to invest money on expensive equipment that you might not be using frequently.

Keep your memories safe

The preservation of your home movies is just one way to protect your most precious possessions. In the end, home is where memories are created – and we know the effort involved in caring for it.
