It’s hilarious to think that anyone could need advice on how to shop to find the right wedding dress. However, bridal commerce is not like going to Topshop and spending five minutes changing. Our society isn’t used to seeing brides wearing ball gowns, so we have to remind them to slow down and take a deep breath, and to just enjoy the process.
This will be your one chance in life to purchase such an important outfit. So we encourage you to have fun with it, and most importantly, to do it right. Here are some things to consider when shopping for your wedding gown.
Tip # 1
Research your shopping destination…
You may be tempted to visit every bridal shop within 150 miles and try on every one of your wedding dresses. This is madness, and it will give you the nickname Muriel.
Instead, maximize your shopping experience by choosing the right places to shop. Are you willing to share the shop floor with other brides? Or would you prefer private consultations? Is it more convenient to have your dress delivered to you at your venue, or closer so that you can arrange fittings on your own schedule. Do you see the shop you’re interested in carrying the wedding dresses you love?
Tip #2
Do designers matter…?
It used to be that all you heard from engaged girls was “I simply must wear a Vera Wang dress!” But in reality, most brides-tobe realize that their guests won’t know or care who their dress is by as soon as they step down the aisle.
Designers do a lot to establish a reputation. So if you love a particular brand, make sure that you shop at a place that has their collection. This may sound obvious, but not all wedding dress boutiques carry every designer.
Tip # 3
Wear the right unisex underwear
You shouldn’t wear your pants that have been elasticized. Because it will affect the fit of a dress, make sure that your underwear matches the ones you will be wearing on the big occasion. Neon lingerie is not a good idea, as are black underwear. You should be neutral and, if necessary, support your body shape. Even if you don’t have a bra strapless, it might be worth having one to carry in case the dress that you love needs more support.
Tip #4
Don’t leave your entourage behind…
A whole blog post was written about the fatal sin of wedding dress shopping: bringing too many people along. You might think it’s an enjoyable day for your Mum, your bridesmaids, and extended family. But, you’ll be depressed and even on the brink or murder.
We recommend only bringing one to two trusted voices. If you bring more than that, you won’t be able hear your own thoughts.
Trust us.
Tip #5
Be open about your budget
Some brides believe they should be cautious about how much money they spend on wedding dresses. It doesn’t matter if it’s a thing of prestige or if they are just trying on expensive dresses. But here’s the truth ladies: we can only help you if you know exactly what you need.
As you wouldn’t say you are a size 8 if it were a 14, so it’s best to not pretend you have a 10k budget, even if it is closer than that.
It will only bring you to your knees.
Tip #6
Take a little of everything and wear it!
This is a common advice that you have probably heard before. This will allow you to rule out all the things you don’t like. You may be surprised at the things you love. You will be able to make great sartorial choices if you are open-minded.
Tip # 7
Take a look at context
When and where will you get married. What will your bridesmaids be wearing.. What will your groom wear.. How long will your dress be on you..? Do you plan to wear your dress in multiple environments, or will you stay in one location? The dress you wear will be influenced by all of these factors.
Tip # 8
We want to see you as the real you
Don’t be bound to a definition of what a “bride” should be. Your wedding day should be just as you are, but a little more beautiful. Don’t wear tight-fitting clothing if you don’t like the look. Take a look at your closet and identify the things that make you feel like a rockstar. Then we can turn it into serious big-day style.
Tip #9
It’s more than the dress…
Nowadays, bridal outfits are more about accessories than the dress. A lot of brides use their dress as a starting point for the rest of their look.
Tip #10
Enjoy yourself…!
As we mentioned at the beginning, this is probably the only time you will get to dress up on this scale. This is an important step in your journey to becoming a wife. This is a great way to accept your body and celebrate your style.
Being a bride can mean that everything is completely about you. Take the time to relish that experience.
