Although it is true that most people visit the dentist at least twice per year, you are responsible for your unique smile. It all depends on your oral hygiene habits and medical conditions.

While some people only visit the dentist twice a year or less, others need to see them more frequently. Don’t be afraid! They will probably tell you when they wish to see you again.

Who should see the dentist more often?

Some people visit the dentist twice a year. Who is this? Patients at higher risk for dental disease or other health problems may need to visit the dentist every three months. These people are at higher risk include:

Women who are pregnant
Smokers
Diabetics
Gum disease patients
People who have a weak immune system
Plaque build up and cavities are common in people who are susceptible to them

Why is it important to visit the dentist?

Even if you floss twice daily and brush your teeth twice daily, it is still important to see a dentist on a regular basis. Your dentist, dental therapist, and dental hygienist can check for issues that you may not be able to see or feel. Sometimes, things like gum disease or cavities aren’t visible until they become more severe. Dentists are often the first to spot oral cancer in many patients.

Regular visits to the dentist are important because it is possible to prevent or treat an issue early. Regular visits to the dentist can help you save time, money, and discomfort.

What can you do to keep your dentist appointments to a minimum?

Good oral hygiene is the best way to reduce dental visits. Keep your dental visits to a minimum by brushing your teeth twice daily and flossing or using interdental brushes every day. Guess what? You might be able to extend the time between visits if your dentist hasn’t seen any signs of gingivitis or cavities for several years.

You now know that your smile situation will dictate how often you visit the dentist. Some people, such as smokers or diabetics, may need to visit the dentist more frequently. Visiting the dentist can be a preventative measure that will improve your overall health. It will also make things much easier in the long-term. Your dentist may reduce the frequency of your dental visits if you maintain good oral hygiene. Always follow your dentist’s instructions regarding your next appointment. If it has been awhile, it is time to reply to the text, phone, or email sent by your dentist’s practice for your next check-in.
