Betfred are one of the most famous names within the bookmaking industry within the UK. The company was founded by brothers Fred and Peter Done in 1967 and since then, they have grown to be an institution within the gambling industry.

The high streets are an integral part of the business for Betfred and, as a result, they still have over 1,300 betting outlets in operation. It’s also pretty rare in that the Betfred brand has remained on their own and haven’t participated in any major mergers during their history either.

High Street Betting Shops

Betfred are one of the few bookmakers who are still very prominent on the high street in the present. They almost feel of the kind of brand that wants to continue in the traditions that served them so well and while they serve an impressive online sportsbook, the high-street is where they are most comfortable.

Betfred boasts more than 1,300 betting stores across the UK and Ireland. A annual turnover of PS8 billion per year shows the power of their brand and, with that, they’re a company which is focused on maintaining the high street betting industry.

The popularity of high-street stores has been constant and increased in recent years. Although the expansion has slowed over the past few years, they’ve been able to add more than 1,000 shops. They are one of the few companies that are working against the grain of moving away from high street shops to go onlinestores, and doing well at it.

On the Internet

The online betting portion of the industry has been very profitable. It’s a sure way by which the company earns the bulk of their profits in the present and they’re often viewed as one of the most prominent online bookmakers.

If we are being honest, the online site has a lot to be unsatisfied in the current atmosphere. The site has become rather dated, and we think it’s in dire need of a change. The best way we’ve saw it described was neglected and that’s exactly what we think it is. There’s nothing incorrect with it, but when you look at the likes of bet365 and BetVictor, there is certain to be something lacking in the design department.

The content of the website from a wagering perspective is really great. They’re popular with horse racing and football enthusiasts So if you’re interested in either of these two sports, you’re going be made to feel extremely welcome.

They can provide a number of features that you cant get from the retail stores on the high street like betting on cash out live stats, live betting, live streaming, an array of betting promotions, a huge range of sports and an integration between their casino, poker and bingo sites. Don’t forgetthat all of this is accessible via their mobile betting apps and also on their mobile betting app!

About Betfred

The Betfred brand comes of out of the two brothers Fred Peter Done and Fred Peter Done. The brothers came from gambling backgrounds and throughout the 50s and 60s the pair frequently worked as runners for their father’s gaming firm. They would frequent local establishments and pubs, place bets, then go back to work with said bets.

All this was before betting shops were legally legalized. But, the brothers did not actually launch a shops of their own until 1967, a few months after the prohibition on high-street bookmakers had been lifted and some years after companies like William Hill and Ladbrokes had grown in the book industry.

They were able purchase their first store on the success of a bet on England winning in the 1996 World Cup. They invested their funds into a store in Salford, Manchester and the rest is, as they say is the story of history!

Expansion

The company was unable to grow at the pace that some of the larger names, but Fred and his brother Peter knew this and were glad to have their own turf within the Manchester. The nimble couple were always coming up with innovative ideas for betting markets, eventually coming up with the idea in 1984 of Lucky 15 in 1984. This bet is popular as it was in 1984 and is often regarded as the first genuine innovation in betting markets and created the basis for many that followed.

By 1997 , the company had broken the 100 shop market, and at by this point they began to gain popularity. Their most iconic tactics was to pay out early on certain markets for betting. They were the first to make this happen in 1998 when they paid Manchester United to win the Premier League. However, Arsenal managed to pip them to the post, generating huge buzz around the brand.

Acquisitions

As Betfred was growing, in 1999 they could make their first acquisition, which took the form of 40 shops belonging to Demmy Racing Group. Demmy Racing Group. By 2005 they now had over 50 shops to their name. They also became the first betting shop that made a million dollars in the year before.

Moving Online

At this time – 2004 the company was fully operational. They were sponsoring some of the world’s biggest sporting teams such as Manchester united Manchester united – and some of the most important sporting events – Group 1 Sprint Cup, Group 2 Temple Stakes – in the world.

By 2006, they’d been mobile, and became one of the bookmakers to do so in the year 2006. Three years later, they declared that they owned an astounding 800 betting outlets and saw huge expansion over a 10 year period.

The Tote

2011 saw the company’s biggest acquisition come in the shape of the Tote in a deal worth PS265 million. Betfred were selected from a shortlist of companies that had applied to buy the business from the government. As part of the deal it was set out that a portion of the proceeds was to be returned to tax payers and also to horse racing charities.

However, since 2011 Betfred’s dealings with the Tote haven’t been always that popular from people inside the business. They have often been criticised for not putting enough money to the industry and there have been consortiums formed to attempt and back the business to allow additional funds to be distributed to race charities. However, Done does refute the assertions, asserting that they have never been in a better position in regards to the money that is invested from the Tote.

Current Growth

Betfred remain a name that continues to make certain positive strands even in the age of competition which we live in today. It’s possible to say that they aren’t growing as much as they did previously particularly when they went from the revenue at PS550 millions to PS3.5 billion within 1 financial year back in 2004. However, the business is quite different as it was which is why we don’t think we can expect to see them grow like that.

The work Betfred has put into sport that includes horse racing and snooker as well as football, is to be commended. They have been able to invest millions of dollars back into these sports , and at a times when, particularly with Snooker and horse racing they needed a jolt of life.
