One of the unanticipated side-effects of the Covid pandemic is the creation of the biggest remote working experiment that has ever been conducted. The experiment caused business owners from all over the globe to review the way they run their businesses and has led to a massive change from office-based to hybrid working.

In this article we’ll break down the benefits of working in a hybrid manner to three major categories: the ones which benefit employees as individuals as well as the companies they are employed by, and those that are beneficial to society as a whole. We’ll try to demonstrate that, while these new ways of working could make a significant difference on the people and companies who adopt these methods, society at large will benefit just as significantly.

Hybrid benefits that work for people

The primary benefits associated with hybrid work are those that are experienced by the individual “knowledge workers”. These benefits can vary depending on the particular form of hybrid work being used in any particular company department, team, or even the entire organization. In general they are categorized into three broad categories: better health as well as increased income and greater mobility.

Increased Well-being of Employees

People who have experience with hybrid work tend to claim that it provides them with more autonomy and freedom regarding where and when they work and they can reduce the amount of time they spend commuting. In combination, these changes have resulted in improving the balance between work and life of the majority of hybrid workers, and have made them overall more satisfied.

Affective increase in income

In the old world there were many who spent around twenty to thirty pounds per day , sometimes more, to commute to work. In the course of a year, this could add up to thousands of dollars on transportation costs alone. Because it allows people to work from home more frequently, hybrid work allows knowledge workers to reduce their travel expenses and effectively serves as an income tax-free boost to disposable income.

More Mobility

While commute times used to be an important factor in determining the location the individual was able and willing to work, the concept of hybrid work has eased the restrictions on geographic mobility, allowing workers to work for companies that are located in a wider selection of locations. For instance, it’s quite possible that someone who lives in Manchester is employed by an organization that is based in London with a commute to the office every week or every month, and working at home the rest all the time. It’s increasingly plausible that someone living in Manchester could be working for an organization that is based in such a place as California traveling across the country for large events while working at home for the majority of the time. This could allow the majority of hybrid workers to get jobs without having to move.

Hybrid benefits of working for organisations

One of the most persistent misconceptions about hybrid working is that even though people stand to benefit massively from the new methods of working, the benefits to organizations are more obscure. It’s not true. In the new world of work and hybrid working, it is expected to give a substantial advantage to companies who can achieve it.

Reduced real estate costs

There are numerous financial benefits for companies that are willing to adopt hybrid working. In simple terms, businesses which do not need to furnish a desk in an office for every employee can reduce their expenses through reducing the footprint of their offices. Costs for real estate, especially in big, well-off urban centres can be staggering. Less space equals less rent.

Worker productivity is improved

Organizations also stand to gain from the increased mental health that hybrid work provides their employees. People who are content and well-balanced are much happier and more productive. (This is the case with many of the recent studies have proven productivity rises when employees work remotely). Companies that can keep a happy, high productive employees will be more competitive than those who do not.

Better retention rates

One of the main worries we hear about is that the hybrid/virtual work environment adversely affects retention. Organizations are concerned that if their employees do not have access to the physical office on a daily basis and are not working from home, they won’t have the chance to build bonds with their colleagues or to become connected to the vision of the company. This means that when recruiters and headhunters call, the employees are less likely to stay faithful to their present employer in the same way they were in the traditional office-based regime. In the real world What we’re realizing is that many businesses who are not offering attractive virtual and hybrid work plans are losing employees to firms that will give the employees what they need. It’s possible to conclude that the two benefits with hybrid working include improved retention rates as well as a better capacity to attract the best talent.

A larger talent pool

In line with the previous idea about higher retention rates and the ability in securing top talent companies that use hybrid working models will also have more places from which they are in a position to hire than companies who do not.Under the traditional model of office work, for instance, a company that is based in Seattle was required to recruit employees from Seattle and the surroundings. In a hybrid model that same company can cast its net farther, possibly across the entire US which will significantly increase the number of applicants who are able to choose its employees.

The ability to increase the number of people in your staff without incurring additional cost of space

Due to the lesser need for workplace utilization Hybrid working offers the opportunity for companies to decrease their footprints for office space and, consequently, significantly lower their expenses for real estate. However, many companies are bound to long-term leases on real estate due to a variety of reasons which make office downsizing difficult or even impossible. One bright side for these businesses is that they’re now in a position to dramatically increase the number of employees they employ without incurring additional space-related expenses.

Increased visibility for senior leaders

Auditoriums and meeting rooms have a limit on capacity, which limits the number of people who are able to attend an occasion. The result is that information tends to flow down the organizational hierarchy, moving through various management levels until it is received by workers on the ground floor. Virtual meeting rooms however they are free of restrictions on space whatsoever, providing an opportunity for top executives to directly interact with each person in the company.

Hybrid work benefits for society

While the benefits of working in a hybrid way to companies or individuals are simple to quantify but it can be hard to measure the value these new methods of working can bring to society as a whole. However, we can provide a variety of general statements about the vast social and societal effects from hybrid workplaces.

Environmental benefits

Hybrid work is expected to have a tremendously positive effects on the environmental. With fewer employees coming into the office every day, the requirement for large office spaces can be significantly decreased. Smaller offices don’t just result in lower rental costs, but they also result in less office pollution. And If fewer people have to go into the office each day and travel to other countries to work, then the pollution from the commute (cars/trains/flights and so on.) will also drop. When implemented globally and encompassing these changes to office footprints, commute as well as business travel are likely to result in pollution generated by corporations will drop which is a huge win for our society.

More employment rates

If workers who are knowledgeable can apply for jobs that are located in a wider variety of places, and if employers are able to employ from a greater selection of applicants and job advertisements for these types of hybrid positions will most likely to get filled faster than jobs that are purely office-based. This could lead to a rise in employment rates that are higher in those areas where hybrid working is widely used.

A healthier society

In closing this article we’ll return to the initial issue we raised, that of the increased well-being for the hybrid workers.Society is, in essence the collective of people. If the individuals who are happy and healthier as a result of their hybrid work, the society they are a part of is likely to be healthier and happier. The benefits of working in a hybrid could begin with hybrid workers however, they will likely to extend to the family and friends of hybrid workers before eventually affecting every aspect of the modern life.Hybrid working by itself might not be the panacea for the problems of society but it’s as this amazing experiment has proven, a crucial element to the overall puzzle.

The advantages of working in hybrid jobs are numerous It’s about time that companies look at their workplace strategy.
