In comparison to similar Cuban products, Montecristo is not particularly old. However, what they aren’t in years they make up with history!

The Montecristo’s Early Years

It was the year 1935 when Alonso Menendez purchased the Cuban Particulares factory from the producers of the well-known Particulares cigarettes. In keeping with a pattern established by the company’s manager in Romeo y Julieta, Menendez made the decision to change the name of the cigar brand in order to be a reference to the Torcedor’s favorite cigar rolling book, The Count of Monte Cristo.

The story of revenge for personal gain was also the inspiration for the Montecristo logo created by John Hunter Morris which consists of a triangular shape made up of six swords and flowers.

Montecristo as well as the Cuban Revolution

After the growing popularity in this Montecristo label, Menendez bought the H.Upmann factory in the following year and transferred production to the new location.

In the Cuban revolution, Montecristo was nationalised, and the brand continued to manufacture in H. Upmann. H. Upmann factory. Much like many private cigar business owners in the time, Menendez left for the Canary islands to attempt to revive the Montecristo brand. He was supported by British investors, but production was not able to resume in the United States because of a failed legal dispute with Cubatabaco.

Following the Cuban Embargo Menendez returned to Montecristo within the Dominican Republic so that he could begin shipping it directly to U.S. This brand was controlled by Altadis SA, though it wasn’t as well-known or as well-made like the first Cuban manufactured Montecristo brand.

In the 70s and 1980s, Montecrsto (now under the direction by the Cuban government) increased in quality and recognition. It was able to become one of the top brands in Cuba and is now among the most well-known Cuban cigar brands worldwide, holding nearly a quarter market share.

Furthermore in addition, certain Montecristo cigars are considered to be top of the line worldwide, including the Montecristo No.4 is the highest selling cigar in the world and the Montecristo No.2 being regarded as the best cigar in the world by a lot of aficionados.
