Southampton chief Rasmus Ankersen admits there will be player turnover at the club this summer but added that there will be members of the squad they try to keep hold of amid uncertainty over former Burnley loanee Nathan Tella’s future.
The St Mary’s club finished rock bottom of the Premier League and will be playing in the Championship next season.
They replace Burnley in the division as the Clarets reclaimed their place in the top flight after just one season away. Southampton will be aiming to replicate what the Clarets recently achieved under Vincent Kompany and make their stay in the Championship as short as possible.

Tella ended last season as Burnley’s top scorer after a fantastic spell on loan at Turf Moor. He scored 19 goals in all competitions as the Clarets sealed the Championship title.
The Clarets want Tella back at Turf Moor next season and the player has enjoyed his time at the club working under Kompany and playing regular football.
With more than two years left to run on his contract at St Mary’s, the south coast side are under no immediate pressure to sell Tella and they know what the player is capable of achieving in the division they are about to enter. It will also depend on how much Burnley would be willing to spend to bring Tella back to Turf Moor and if that meets Southampton’s valuation.
Outlining the club’s transfer window approach this summer, Ankersen admits there will be a degree of turnover in Southampton’s squad as it is too big and needs trimming. Though he did not name any players in particular, he admits there are “very talented” players within the squad they will be intending to keep hold of.
“There will be some turnover because the squad is too big but there are some very talented football players in that group which we will be intending to keep,” he told the Daily Echo.
“I think it’s more an exciting job for the manager and director of football. If I was the manager that looked into the dressing room, I wouldn’t be too worried.”
