Over the years, we’ve witnessed numerous successful horror films morph into franchises, with enthusiasts eagerly heading to the cinemas to catch the latest chapters of their beloved series.
Finally putting an end to speculation, the most successful horror movie sequels have been unveiled, and they might not be the ones you’d expect.
VegasInsider.com has conducted a data analysis of over 350 horror films from more than 70 horror franchises. The data points scrutinised included reported worldwide gross and return on investment, IMDb ratings score, Metacritic score, and Rotten Tomatoes score.
According to the findings, Evil Dead 2 (1987), 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016), Terrifier 2 (2022) and Terrifier 3 (2024) are the all-time most successful horror continuations.
Both the second and third instalments of the Terrifier franchise surpassed the first part, which was released in 2016, reports the Mi rror.
Terrifier 3 saw one of the highest upward trends in its IMDb user ratings score, with the score increasing with each film. The first film scored 5.6 out of 10, the second received a 6.1, while the most recent film currently stands at 6.7.
Both Evil Dead 2 and 10 Cloverfield Lane outperformed their predecessors in terms of return on investments, Metacritic, Rotten Tomatoes, and IMDb scores.
Terrifier 3 hit the screens earlier this month on October 11, perfectly timed for Halloween and the spooky season.
The film’s storyline follows Sienna Shaw (played by Lauren LaVera) as she attempts to reconstruct her life, all while Art the Clown (David Howard Thornton) and his new accomplice Victoria Heyes (Samantha Scaffidi) are in hot pursuit.
The initial movie received mixed feedback from critics who felt that the plot was lacking and the main characters were underdeveloped.
Nevertheless, the sequel proved to be a hit at the box office and garnered positive reviews from critics, who noted the marginal improvement in the follow-up.
Devotees of the series will be thrilled to learn that a fourth instalment is underway, as confirmed by director Damien Leone. However, it is set to be the final chapter of the franchise, tying up the narratives of Art the Clown, The Little Pale Girl, Victoria Heyes and Sienna Shaw.
