Maxwel Cornet suffered a thigh strain in the Premier League defeat to Burnley and could miss the home game with West Ham next week.
The Clarets forward was forced off on the half hour at St James’ Park as Sean Dyche’s side slipped to a disappointing 1-0 defeat.
Cornet had started up front alongside Chris Wood and had two half chances in the opening quarter, shooting wide and seeing a header saved by Martin Dubravka.

But as he shaped to send Wood through on the near touchline, the Ivory Coast international felt his quad and immediately looked in discomfort.
Burnley replaced him with Matej Vydra and Cornet hobbled off.
The hope is that the 26-year-old’s immediate withdrawal means the injury won’t be a serious one but there is already some doubt as to whether he will recover in time to face the Hammers.
“I think it is a thigh strain so we will wait and see how that calms down,” was Dyche’s assessment after the match.
Cornet has already had one spell on the sidelines this season after sustaining a hamstring injury at Leicester City shortly after scoring his first Burnley goal.
That saw him miss the draw at Norwich in a relatively short absence helped by an international break.
Burnley will not take any chances with their star man given the hectic festive schedule with the Clarets facing West Ham, Watford and Aston Villa in the space of six days.
The Clarets will hope to have Ben Mee available after the skipper missed the Newcastle defeat with a shoulder problem.
The centre back picked up the problem at Wolves in midweek but the hope is he will be fit to feature against the Hammers.
“It was serious enough to keep him out today,” said Dyche on the 32-year-old.
Ashley Barnes remains a long term injury for Burnley while Phil Bardsley is also sidelined and Dale Stephens is unavailable due to a Covid positive.
The Clarets are in the bottom three in the Premier League, level on points with Newcastle and Norwich after their weekend defeat.
