A stretch of the M65 is at a “total standstill” this afternoon following a serious crash. Lancashire Police said the collision happened on the eastbound carriageway between junction 7 for Accrington and junction 8 for Burnley.
It was first reported at around 3.30pm today (February 3). One motorist posted on social media saying: “M65 East 1 mile from Accy exit total standstill void police flying down hard shoulder”.
Another wrote: “Stuck on M65, air ambulance has arrived. Several police.”
Police are urging motorists to avoid the area. National Highways said the incident was a “serious collision involving a car”.
It said Lancashire Police, Lancashire Fire & Rescue, North West Ambulance Service, North West Air Ambulance and National Highways Traffic Officers are all in attendance.

Inrix says traffic speeds are just 5mph currently on the M65 eastbound as those delays continue this evening – however it reports that the congestion is now easing:

The M65 in Lancashire is closed eastbound is closed between J7 (Accrington) and J8 (Hapton) due to a serious collision involving a car.

Diverted traffic is advised to follow the solid triangle diversion symbol:
- Exit the M65 eastbound at J7
- At the roundabout follow the A6185 northbound Dunkenhalgh Way until the A678 junction
- Turn right onto the A678 eastbound Blackburn Road and continue until the A6068 junction
- Turn right onto the A6068 and continue onward to then re-join the M65 at J8

Two lanes remain closed on the M65. Inrix’s latest update:
Two lanes closed and queueing traffic due to accident on M65 Eastbound from J7 A6185 Hyndburn Road (Rishton / Accrington) to J8 A56 (Accrington).
