Kate Garraway is said to at her husband Derek Draper’s bedside and “praying for a miracle” after he reportedly suffered a heart attack leaving him fighting for his life in hospital. The former political advisor, from Chorley, became seriously ill with coronavirus at the start of the pandemic in 2020, resulting in long-lasting damage to his organs and needing daily care.
His Good Morning Britain presenter wife has since shared regular updates on his ongoing health battle. Kate only sleeps for around four hours most nights and has not taken a day off since he became sick.
It is understood Derek was taken ill last week, the Mirror reports, and Kate has pulled out of all work commitment, including taking a leave of absence from GMB. A source said: “Derek suffered a massive heart attack earlier this week which has left him fighting for his life all over again.”

The source told The Sun: “It was sudden and a shock as he had been doing so well and was in great spirits, looking forward to Christmas at home with the family. This setback has been a huge blow for his family and all the people caring for him.”
They said Kate is “by his side 24 hours a day” and willing her husband to again beat the odds to “come out on the other side”. Kate has been supporting Derek alongside caring for their two children, Darcey and Billy.
Despite being declared free of COVID-19 following 10 weeks in a medically induced coma, Derek has been left with long-term complications since contracting the virus. He was discharged on a trial basis in April 2021 but has been readmitted to the wards multiple times with numerous health issues, including kidney failure, brain inflammation and liver damage.
Last month Kate appeared on Loose Women where she revealed Derek’s health battle shows no signs of ending yet but took the time to praise carers. She said that if it wasn’t for the people looking after him, he “would have died”.
Representatives for Kate and ITV have been approached for comment.
