Jon Dahl Tomasson recorded his first win as Blackburn Rovers boss at the first time of asking with a 1-0 win over Queens Park Rangers.

Lewis Travis’ stunning 30-yard strike was worthy of winning any match and did just that at Ewood Park. His first-half strike was the decisive moment in a tightly-contested Championship opener.

QPR struggled to create many chances of note but had struck the crossbar with their own long-range strike. Unlike Travis, Osman Kaykay was inches out.

Overall, it was a satisfactory afternoon for 14,000 Ewood crowd, who were delighted to see their team get off the mark. With that in mind, Lancs Live takes a look at the ups and downs from Ewood Park.

UPS

A goal worthy of winning any game

It was a strike befitting of three points. What a goal from Travis.

It’s been quite the week for the Blackburn Rovers skipper after being officially appointed as Darragh Lenihan’s successor. To cap it off, a goal, three points and a clean sheet.

It was another good display from Travis outside of the goal too. He was typically tenacious and there is a good balance between him and John Buckley in the double pivot.

Ayala at his best

The Spaniard rolled back the years on Saturday to produce a man-of-the-match performance. Lyndon Dykes didn’t get a sniff all game and that was down to Ayala.

Everyone knows that there are few better 18-yard box defenders than Ayala in the Championship. He reads the game fantastically and is a nightmare for any attacker with aerial and physical duels.

The big challenge for Ayala is to prove his fitness and show these performances on a regular basis, which he hasn’t done in the last two seasons. If he can do that, he will be a big player for a very youthful side.

A clear plan

Not everything Blackburn Rovers tried to do came off on Saturday. But, undeniably, there was a clear plan and method to their play.

Tomasson wants his side to play with fluidity in the final third, with four attackers given license to roam and create. That has been a clear strategy throughout pre-season and it was again evident against QPR.

That might, at times, leave them exposed in midfield but it creates big opportunities in transitions. As Tomasson referenced himself, if the final pass had been better, they could have scored more goals in the second half.

At times, there is a lack of width which is a concern, it puts a huge onus on the full-backs. But when things clicked in the final third, you could see a clear philosophy that will only develop throughout the season.

DOWNS

Transfer priority clear

Undoubtedly, Rovers’ need for a new centre-back has increased with Hayden Carter sustaining an injury. It’s understood the defender could miss a month of action.

It left Tomasson with only Sam Barnes and Ash Phillips as centre-back cover. Whilst both have looked good during pre-season, it’s a lot to ask.

Rovers have already missed out on two centre-back targets. Now they’ve got really accelerate their plans and get some senior cover through the door.
