Part of a new mosque being built in Blackburn is almost complete as construction of the Issa brothers-funded place of worship continues.
Spades went in the ground at the site in Preston New Road after planning permission was granted back in March 2021. Funding from the project comes from the Issa Foundation, a registered charity set up in 2016, which has Asda-owners Mohsin and Zuber Issa listed as trustees.
Last March pictures showed the two towering 29-metre minarets had been added to the mosque. This week construction of the community centre, set back from the main mosque, appears to be almost finished.

Eight projects the Issa brothers are building in Lancashire including Starbucks, mansions and mosque
Mohsin and Zuber Issa, who both attended Witton Park High School, were brought up by Indian-born Vali and Zubeda who came to the UK from Gujarat in the 1960s to work in Lancashire’s textile industry. Their parents later ran a petrol pump which no doubt sparked the inspiration behind the creation of Euro Garages by Mohsin and Zuber in 2001.
In a nod to the brothers’ philanthropic vision they were both appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2020 Birthday Honours for services to business and charity. They are also behind the construction of five mansions in Billinge End Road and the country’s first drive-thru Indian street food restaurant in Bolton.
The mosque building in Preston New Road will be two storeys high flanked by two rectangular wings to form a courtyard enclosure leading to the main entrance. The courtyard will be surrounded by a colonnade of arches encompassing the entrance to the mosque.
Geeta Hussein, who lives nearby, walks past the construction site most days. “It certainly stands out!” she said.
“They’ve obviously put a lot of thought into the design. I think it looks amazing. I can’t wait to see inside once it’s finished and open.”
