Across Cumbria, just three patients have been reported to have waited more than 18 months to be seen.

Data that has been released by the NHS shows the hospital trusts that have patients waiting more than 18 months to be seen by a specialist. Cumbria features on the list briefly, with three patients at University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust unfortunately making the list.

The targets were to eliminate 18-month waits for planned care, such as knee and hip replacements, and to bring 62-day cancer waits to pre-pandemic levels. NHS England said huge progress had been made, particularly on routine care.

However, some hospitals across the country still have huge backlogs with hundreds of patients still waiting to be seen. North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Trust, which operates hospitals in Whitehaven and Carlisle, is one of 29 hospital trusts that reported patients aren’t waiting more than 18 months to be seen.

Some of the worst offenders include Manchester University with almost 1,000 patients waiting and University Hospitals of Leicester with 837.

Here is the list of hospital trusts that have patients waiting more than 18 months as revealed by NHS England. It reads, from left to right: name of NHS trust; number of patients waiting more than 18 months for treatment at the end of March 2023; the percentage waiting out of choice; the percentage waiting for clinically complex reasons; the percentage waiting as a direct result of the global shortage of corneas; the percentage not waiting for reasons of choice or complexity or cornea shortage.
